College Recruiting (Playing College Sports)… Does Character Matter?

Sports do not build character, they reveal it.  ~Hale Broun

How do you define character?  How does it relate to sports?  Are you born with character?  Can you learn it?  What is character after all?  And how does it have anything to do with college recruiting?

These are all great questions.  We know that character matters in everything we do in life.  It has been said that: “Character embraces the habits (head, heart and mind) one learns and the choices one makes”. You will learn through Playing the Recruiting Game™, we provide you with likely outcomes for every decision you make during the process and you will also learn, if you do it right in college recruiting; you are ready to do it right in life both on and off the field.

Football is like life-it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.  ~Vince Lombardi

You will be educated and given opportunities to study, think about, put into practice and then DECIDE AND ACT ON, character traits such as responsibility, respect of yourself and others, honesty, integrity and ethical problem solving.  Character is your moral compass.  Character says a lot about who you are and college coaches want to know who you are.  Coaches want to know about your work ethic because at the end of the day; if you are academically qualified and have the performance traits but are lacking in character; more likely than not you will not be recruited.  You will find that CHARACTER (work ethic, responsibility, respect) is what may get you in the door, if your talents are not as good as what are sought after. You will also find in life; business, relationships and all that you do: CHARACTER RULES!

College recruiting and playing College Sports are hard work.  It will take every character trait to make it through.  Character will help you when studying and improving your grades and scores when you are exhausted and at your end.  Character will help you when you can’t do another move on the field or another Football Workout in the gym.  Character will help you when you communicate with others.  Your character is your heart and your soul and it will be the most important thing you have to help you get you recruited to play the College Sport you love and and earn an Athletic Scholarship!

Character also is learned; there are no character genes. Character is not about reputation-it is not about status, fame or wealth. Educating for character is about offering student-athletes opportunities to study, clarify, reflect, decide, practice and act on such virtues as respect, responsibility, perseverance, honesty, ethical problem solving and decision making, both on and off the field or court.
